Firstly – What IS an elopement?

The definition of an elopement has changed a lot since its origins. Although it used to mean something along the lines of “running away from your family and getting secretly married” now, the definition is more along the lines of “choosing to get married in a way that is different from a traditional wedding.”

Eloping is about creating a wedding day that is a reflection of who you are your love are. We truly believe it’s one of the best ways to get married. We love that you are considering it for your day!

Eloping is more than just a trend—it’s a shift in how couples choose to celebrate their love in a way that prioritizes intimacy, authenticity, and adventure.

Modern elopements are about creating a deeply personal experience that reflects your unique love story. They’re for couples who want to focus on each other without the stress or expectations of a large traditional wedding.

THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS TO GET MARRIED:

  • Adventure-Filled Days: Hike to a mountaintop, exchange vows by a waterfall, or explore a hidden forest trail.
  • Destination Dreams: Rent a charming European château or a cozy cabin in the woods to create a magical setting for your special day.
  • Hybrid Celebrations: Have a private ceremony with just the two of you, followed by a reception with close family and friends another day.

Those are just some examples! At its core, an elopement is about freedom—freedom to craft a wedding day that feels like you, whether that’s climbing a mountain in your hiking boots or sharing a simple picnic in a serene meadow. It’s about focusing on the moments and memories that truly matter.

Best Places to Elope in Asheville, North Carolina

There are so many gorgeous places to elope in Asheville, North Carolina. The Blue Ridge Mountains offer such a unique landscape all across Western North Carolina. Here are some of our favorite spots in the area!

Get married in the Blue Ridge Parkway

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a scenic drive going through the Blue Ridge Mountains that starts in Shenandoah National Park, near Waynesboro, VA (Milepost 0) and ends with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, near Cherokee, NC (Milepost 469). Western North Carolina takes up most of the parkway, and is filled with so many beautiful hikes to choose from. The best part of it is that there are hikes that are less than 30 minutes that can get you some of the most beautiful views of the mountains! Note: there is a permit you need to obtain to get married in the Blue Ridge Parkway (here is the info: https://www.nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/wedding-permits.htm)

HERE ARE JUST *SOME* OF OUR FAVORITE SPOTS:

  • CRAGGY GARDENS: Known for its rhododendron blooms in late spring, this area offers a short hike to a grassy bald with panoramic mountain views. The trail is approximately 1.4 miles round trip and is moderately easy.
  • CHESTOA VIEW OVERLOOK: This easily accessible spot features a stone overlook with expansive views of the Linville Gorge, often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of the East.”
  • MOUNT MITCHELL: The highest peak east of the Mississippi River, Mount Mitchell offers incredible panoramic views and a sense of serenity. The summit is accessible via a short walk from the parking area.

PERMIT INFORMATION: A Special Use Permit is required for ceremonies on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The permit costs $100 and can be applied for online. It’s advisable to plan for a weekday elopement to avoid crowds. Note that permits are unavailable during the month of October.

PRO TIP: Plan your ceremony for sunrise or sunset to enjoy soft lighting and fewer visitors.

Elope in Pisgah National Forest

There are three districts in Pisgah National Forest, all of them beautiful and actually quite different from each other. These are: The Pisgah, The Grandfather, and the Appalachian Ranger Districts. Pisgah National Forest is more remote, and offers so much adventure and fun. There are no permits needed for this area, but keep yourself up to date with what they allow in regards to weddings – most areas don’t allow more than a group of 10 people!

Here are some of our favorite spots:

  • Black Balsam Knob: Part of the Art Loeb Trail, this area is famous for its open, grassy balds offering 360-degree mountain views. The hike to the summit is approximately 1.5 miles round trip with a moderate incline. It’s a favored spot for sunset ceremonies.
  • Looking Glass Falls: One of the most accessible waterfalls in the area, it’s visible from the roadside with a short walk down to the base. The falls provide a serene and powerful backdrop for vows.
  • Graveyard Fields: A popular location for its picturesque waterfalls and fields. This moderate hike offers plenty of photo opportunities.
  • Max Patch: A breathtaking grassy bald with 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains, Max Patch is perfect for couples seeking a wide-open, natural backdrop. The hike to the summit is an easy 1.5 miles round trip.
  • Grandfather Mountain: Grandfather Mountain offers dramatic vistas, rocky terrain, and iconic spots like the Mile High Swinging Bridge. It’s an excellent location for adventurous couples who want striking scenery in their photos. A permit is required for elopements, and restrictions may apply to protect the area’s delicate ecosystem. Contact the Grandfather Mountain office for details.
  • Wiseman’s View: Wisemans View is a hidden gem overlooking the Linville Gorge, often called the “Grand Canyon of the East.” This location offers dramatic vistas of the gorge and Table Rock Mountain. It’s super accessible, just a short walk with STUNNING views. 4WD required (its worth it)

PERMIT INFORMATION: No permits are required for small ceremonies in Pisgah National Forest, provided the group is less than 10 people, and no special setups are involved. However, it’s essential to adhere to Leave No Trace principles to preserve the natural beauty. CONTACT Pisgah National Forest if you want to do an elopement in these areas and ask specifically as rules can change at any point.

The Biltmore

I had to include this as an option because – how could I not? The Biltmore is an 8000 acre estate filled with mountains, fields, rivers, lagoons, gardens, and most importantly the “castle” or a Châteauesque-style mansion that is huge and absolutely gorgeous. It feels like the best of both worlds to have a castle on your wedding day but also you can go into the nature and enjoy the beautiful forests and mountains that surround the Biltmore House. We absolutely love going there and think everyone should enjoy this area at least once in their life!

Booking Information: Elopement packages are available and can be customized to include various estate locations. It’s recommended to contact the Biltmore Estate directly to inquire about availability and pricing.

When should you elope in Asheville North Carolina?

Asheville’s mountains have extreme temperature differences from what you may expect in the city. Give altitude and windchill, a nice 60 degree day in downtown Asheville could mean 30 degrees on the mountain peaks! Even in the middle of the summer, you should expect it to be cool on top of a mountain. If you would rather not wear a thick jacket during your ceremony, or are really cold-natured, a winter/fall elopement would not be the best for you.

Summer (June – August)

Summer is a great time to elope in the mountains. Not only will it be cooler at the top of the mountains, and you can get in the waterfalls and rivers, you will also be surrounded by beautiful greenery and a late setting sunset. We recommend choosing a weekday so we can try to have the mountains to ourselves. This is one of our favorite options for an elopement!

Fall (September to November)

Fall is an absolutely beautiful time in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The colorful foliage, the crisp mountain air, apple picking, everything is ABSOLUTELY perfect. This is also the busiest time in the mountains, so our recommendation is to definitely try to elope on a weekday to avoid the crazy crowds. Try to plan in September and November as October is the busiest month. (Note: you are not allowed to elope in October if you plan on doing so along the Blue Ridge Mountains)

Spring (March to May)

Wildflowers, the air turning warmer, creeks and waterfalls, the greenery is starting to come in, and it is just such a beautiful time in the mountains. Early spring might be cold and roads still might be closed, so late spring will be your best bet.

Winter (Late November – February)

It will be very cold. Now, we totally get the want to have those winter/fall vibes with the dead trees and possible snow, it’s a great vibe! Know that you need to have a backup plan if a winter storm comes through. If you plan on a winter elopement, plan on it being a two person wedding (so that you have more flexibility). You may end up having to move your elopement by as much as a week while roads are cleaned and re-opened.

Since it will be incredibly cold, your dress, shoes, suit, or whatever you decide to wear should be winterized and winter themed. Some awesome ways to do this would be a large beautiful fur jacket, and a thick dress that offers warm layers.

How to Pick Your Wedding Date

Choosing the perfect date for your elopement in Asheville is crucial to ensuring a stress-free and magical experience. Here are some tips to help you select the ideal day:

1. Opt for Weekdays

THIS IS MY MOST IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATION! Weekdays are the best choice for elopements in Asheville, especially during peak seasons like fall when the area is busiest. Popular locations such as the Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah National Forest can get crowded on weekends, so planning your ceremony midweek ensures more privacy and tranquility.

2. Avoid Major Holidays

Major holidays and long weekends often bring an influx of visitors to Asheville. If possible, avoid these dates to sidestep crowded trails, venues, and accommodations. This will make your day feel more intimate and relaxed.

3. Check Seasonal Conditions

Asheville experiences distinct seasons, each offering unique advantages:

  • Spring: Blooming wildflowers and mild weather.
  • Summer: Lush greenery and long daylight hours.
  • Fall: Vibrant foliage but also the busiest season.
  • Winter: Serene landscapes with the possibility of snow.

Choose a season that resonates with your vision and style.

4. Confirm Location Availability

Before finalizing your date, ensure your chosen elopement location is available and permits are secured. Some areas, like the Blue Ridge Parkway, restrict ceremonies during peak months like October. Research and plan ahead to avoid scheduling conflicts.

5. Plan for Sunrise or Sunset

For outdoor elopements, consider scheduling your ceremony during sunrise or sunset. These times not only provide breathtaking lighting for photos but also allow you to avoid the crowds. Sunrise ceremonies offer a peaceful, quiet start to your day, while sunset elopements create a romantic golden-hour ambiance.

By carefully selecting your elopement date, you can create a day that aligns perfectly with your vision and ensures an unforgettable experience.

To ensure your marriage is legally recognized in North Carolina, follow these steps:

  1. OBTAIN A MARRIAGE LICENSE:
    • Both parties must appear in person at the Buncombe County Register of Deeds Office.
    • Provide valid photo identification and, if applicable, a Social Security number.
    • Pay the $60 fee. The license is valid immediately upon issuance and for 60 days thereafter.
    • For Asheville, you can apply for a marriage license at the Buncombe County Register of Deeds Office. Then you pick it up when you arrive for your wedding!
  2. CEREMONY:
    • A civil ceremony can be performed by a magistrate at the Buncombe County Courthouse.
    • Ensure your officiant meets North Carolina’s requirements to legally solemnize your marriage.

PRO TIP: When couples elope with us, there are two ways that they usually do this:

  1. This is the option that most people choose: Get legally married (all the paperwork) done separately on a different day in their home state. Then you can focus your elopement day on doing a symbolic ceremony.
  2. Get legally married with an ordained officiant on the sight, following the steps mentioned above!

Packing Tips for Your Asheville Elopement

  • Bring Extra Layers: Mountain weather can be unpredictable, even in summer. Bring jackets, shawls, or blankets to stay warm during cool evenings or windy conditions.
  • Download Offline Maps: Cell service can be spotty in remote areas. Download maps to avoid getting lost and ensure you can navigate to your location easily.
  • Fill Up Your Gas Tank: Many locations are far from gas stations, so it’s best to start with a full tank.
  • Pack Snacks and Water: Long sessions in remote areas can leave you hungry or dehydrated. Keep snacks and water on hand, especially if you’re hiking.
  • Wear Comfortable Shoes: Even for shorter walks, trails can be rocky or uneven. Wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots, and bring your session shoes to change into.
  • Check Sunset Times: Plan your session around golden hour for the best lighting, but be aware of when the sun sets to avoid hiking back in the dark.
  • Bring Bug Spray and Sunscreen: These essentials will keep you comfortable in both sunny and shaded spots.

Transportation and Accessibility

Navigating Asheville’s scenic spots often requires a car. Parking can be limited at popular trailheads, so plan accordingly. For remote locations, four-wheel-drive vehicles may be necessary.

So, here’s your steps on how to elope in Asheville, North Carolina!

1. Think of Your Elopement Vibes + Choose Your Date (Or Season!)

There are so many beautiful airbnbs going from yurts and cabins by a river to extravagant homes and mansions with stunning mountain views. The possibilities are endless here! Make sure to book these as far in advance as possible.

Depending on what kind of elopement day you are having, you may want some vendors for your day. This can include a florist, videographer, baker, private chef, venue etc! You can be as simple or as extravagant as your heart desires 🙂

4. Enviornmental & Ethical Considerations

No matter if you want a venue or an outdoor elopement, make sure you follow Leave No Trace Principles

Some examples include:

  1. You cannot have live plants, butterflies, birdseed, ribbons, balloons, or open flames, arches, or amplified speakers. If you are having a wedding in nature, keep that the core of your day. Be present in the natural features, the sounds, the sights, and take in the beauty. You truly don’t need all the extra fluff.
  2. Silk or paper flowers work beautifully if you are really wanting a bouquet or flowers for your day!
  3. No arches, stands, balloons, risers. Let nature be your backdrop 🙂
  4. No amplified speakers pls — it disrupts wildlife and takes away from the surrounding beauty.
