If you are wondering what to wear to your engagement shoot – WE GOT YOU. I’m gonna say it – outfits are one of THE most important parts of any photoshoot. Think of movies – the outfit design is super important to convey the time period, the vibes of the film, and really bring you into the world that the director is designing. That’s exactly the energy we need to bring to photoshoots too. With this guide, I’m hoping that I can help you figure out what you are wanting to wear and the vibes you want to bring to your engagement session!

Step 1: Start with What Feels Right

The number one rule: Wear something that feels like you. The more comfortable and confident you feel, the more natural your photos will look.

  • Go with your vibe: If cozy is your thing, go for a chunky sweater with jeans and ankle boots for a warm, laid-back look. Prefer something romantic? A flowy maxi dress can create dreamy, elegant movement in photos.
  • Try something new: Always wanted to wear a bold statement piece, like a vibrant red dress or a a magical flowy dress? If it feels true to you, your engagement shoot is the perfect opportunity to try it.
  • Pick practical shoes: If your session involves walking on cobblestone streets, opt for sturdy-yet-stylish boots, or bring comfy shoes and change into the shoes you want when the session starts.

Step 2: Coordinate, Don’t Match

You and your partner don’t need to wear identical outfits to look cohesive. Instead, aim for complementary colors and textures that reflect your personalities.

  • Complement each other: If one of you wears a neutral cream sweater, the other could wear a muted olive jacket for a subtle pairing.
  • Mix textures: Try a soft wool sweater paired with a silky dress to add visual interest.
  • Stick to a color palette: Think navy blue paired with light blues and greys for a coordinated but not matchy-matchy look.

Step 3: Think About the Location & Season

Your outfits should reflect your surroundings and the season of your shoot.

  • Match the vibe: Shooting in a forest? Opt for flannels, cozy sweaters, and earth tones. Planning a city shoot? A sleek jacket with bold colors can offer a modern feel.
  • Dress for the season: Choose floral prints and pastel colors for spring, rich rusts and olive greens for fall, or cool navy and grey tones for winter shoots. These aren’t hard and fast rules though!
  • Stay practical: For a winter shoot, layer with stylish outerwear like a wool coat and a scarf that complements your overall color scheme.

Step 4: Add Movement for Magic

Photos come alive when there’s movement—whether it’s a twirl, a walk, or a playful moment between the two of you.

  • Go for flow: Dresses, skirts, or wide-leg pants made of lightweight fabrics capture beautiful movement. Especially in the mountains or on the beach with the wind flowing, it really looks extra magical.
  • Add dynamic layers: A scarf, light jacket, or even a duster coat can enhance motion in photos.
  • Stay flexible: Comfortable jeans and a breathable top allow for natural, fun poses.

Step 5: Layer and Add Texture

Textures and layers add visual depth and make your photos more engaging.

  • Play with materials: Mix lace with denim or wool with silk to create texture contrast.
  • Quick outfit refresh: A leather jacket or chunky knit cardigan can instantly change up your look without a full wardrobe swap.
  • Add cozy textures: Chunky scarves or textured sweaters create a warm, inviting feel in colder months.

Step 6: Focus on the Details

Small details can take your outfit from good to great—especially in close-up shots.

  • Accessorize thoughtfully: Simple jewelry, a stylish hat, a flowy knitted scarf, or a minimalistic watch can add a unique personal touch.
  • Highlight your hands: Since engagement rings often take the spotlight, ensure your nails are clean and your hands are moisturized 🙂
  • Stay polished: Make sure clothes are wrinkle-free, shoes are clean, and stray threads are trimmed.

Step 7: Embrace Colors That Reflect Your Personality

Neutral tones are timeless and allow the focus to remain on your connection.

  • Play with color: Greens, blues, and reds can be just as stunning as neutrals, adding vibrancy and personality to your shoot.
  • Go bold or soft: Jewel tones like emerald, sapphire, or ruby bring richness, while lighter shades like blush pink or sky blue offer a softer look.
  • Match your surroundings: Earthy tones like olive green, taupe, or rich red or browns blend seamlessly with outdoor settings, while brighter colors can add a lively contrast against natural backdrops.
  • Avoid loud patterns or small lines: Busy prints, tiny stripes, or overly bright patterns can be distracting and may not photograph well. Opt for subtle prints or solid colors for a cleaner, more timeless look.

Step 8: Plan for Outfit Changes

Switching outfits during your session adds variety and showcases different aspects of your relationship.

  • Bring two looks: One formal, one casual, to capture a range of styles. We always bring a pop up station in our sessions so our couples can change without worrying!
  • Plan logistics: If your shoot is outdoors, bring a blanket or jacket to cover up if it gets windy – being a mountain photographer the weather can change FAST so its always good to have something to cover up if it gets cold!
  • Start casual and end with formal: I love keeping the formal option for last so we can save it for the sunset vibes!

Step 9: Keep It Simple with Patterns

When it comes to patterns, less is more.

  • Opt for subtle prints: Small florals or muted plaid add visual interest without being overwhelming, or opt for layering with different textures to add some visual interest.
  • Balance patterns: If one partner wears a print, the other should wear a solid color for balance.
  • Avoid loud logos and neon colors: They can distract from the focus of your photos—you.

Step 10: Be Yourself

Your engagement photos should reflect your authentic connection.

  • Show your personal style: Whether it’s vintage charm, boho vibes, or minimalist elegance, embrace what makes you you.
  • Incorporate shared interests: This is our biggest tip. If you share a passion—whether it’s hiking or a love for coffee—subtle nods can add personal touches. Think of things like books, painting supplies, card games, etc!
  • Keep it genuine: Authenticity always shines through in photos. Just be yourself and interact with each other the way you would in real life!

FAQs: What to Wear for an Engagement Shoot

Can we wear black for engagement photos? Yes! Black can look incredibly sleek and timeless, especially in urban settings. Just balance it with lighter accessories or contrasting colors.

What colors photograph best for engagement photos? Earth tones, pastels, and neutrals typically photograph beautifully and complement most backgrounds – but we also love a pop of color like dark red, dark green or navy colors. Experiment with some layering too especially with textures!

Should we bring props to our engagement shoot? If it feels true to your story—absolutely! We LOVE when people bring props that are specific to them – Think of cozy blankets, picnic baskets, books, journals, art supplies, games, fun drinks or snacks, anything that is very you. It really adds a uniqueness and storytelling quality to your photos!

Can we wear casual outfits? Definitely! Casual outfits can feel genuine and relaxed, especially when paired with a formal look for variety. (We always bring a pop up changing station to all of our shoots so you can change!)

Final Thoughts

Your engagement shoot should feel natural, joyful, and—most importantly—you. Wear what makes you feel confident, comfortable, and connected.

Relax, trust your photographer, and embrace the experience. The magic happens when you’re just being yourselves.
